Many private and government organisations offer Public WiFi services to their clients, residents, guests and visitors in a variety of settings. These WiFi services are regulated by the Telecommunications Act (1997), the Telecommunications and Data Retention Act (2015) and the Privacy Act (1988).

This seminar will discuss how these regulations affect the provision of a Public WiFi service; what are the areas of uncertainty and the potential legal or reputational risks to service providers?

Speakers

Dr. Ian McShane is a Senior Research Fellow at RMIT University’s Centre for Urban Research. Ian’s research includes local infrastructure and community services and digital technologies.  Ian will explore the areas of overlap of the Privacy Act and Public WiFi provision including some of the risks associated with WiFi solutions which are cloud hosted or managed.

Dr. Chris Wilson is a Research Fellow in the Technology, Communication and Policy Lab of RMIT University’s Digital Ethnography Research Centre. Chris’ presentation will address a key question: Does the provider of Public WiFi services require a Carrier License?

Viktor Grechyn is a PhD candidate at RMIT University’s Centre for Urban Research. Viktor will present findings from his recent national survey of public local government Wi-Fi provision and discuss the evaluation of public Wi-Fi infrastructure.

Daniel Sacchero is the Business Manager at Easyweb Digital. Daniel’s presentation will elaborate on implications of the Data Retention Act on organisations providing Internet connectivity via WiFi to their guests, clients or visitors.

Dr. Iain Sutherland is the Director of Operations at Encapto, an international Public WiFi management platform. Iain will start the seminar by introducing key issues. He will be contributing to open discussion and answering questions at the end of the seminar.
